2023 Honda Passport Towing Capacity

The Honda Passport’s towing capacity is 5,000 lbs. That’s enough to haul a mid-sized camper or boat to the lake for a weekend trip out of town. To access the top towing capacity, you need to opt for the Passport in its all-wheel-drive configuration. With the standard front-wheel drive, the Passport’s towing capacity drops to a still-solid 3,500 lbs.

With towing numbers like these, the Passport is a strong towing option in the mid-sized SUV class. Other popular vehicles in this vehicle class include the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner has the same towing capacity as the Passport, topping out at 5,000 lbs. The Grand Cherokee offers a larger towing capacity, with a maximum of 7,200 lbs.

Passport Engine Specs

All Passports have a 3.5-liter V-6 engine under the hood. This unit achieves 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The power train has a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade.

If you stick with front-wheel drive, your gas mileage numbers will be 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. With the additional performance that’s offered by all-wheel drive, the fuel economy drops slightly to 19 mpg on city roads and 24 mpg on the highway.

Honda Passport Towing by Trim

The Passport is sold in three trims, and the trim that you choose will affect your crossover’s towing capacity. The three trims that are offered are EX-L, TrailSport, and Elite.

The EX-L’s standard towing capacity is 3,500 lbs since it’s equipped with standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade, which means that you can boost the maximum capacity to 5,000 lbs. Both the TrailSport and Elite trims are equipped with standard all-wheel drive, which ensures that these two trims can tow 5,000 lbs.

The TrailSport trim is a wise choice if you’ll be doing some of your towing off the beaten track. The TrailSport comes with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires, which are equipped to cope with rough trail, muddy, or sandy terrain. The TrailSport also features roof rails, which allows you to attach outdoor equipment or other cargo to the roof.

Passport Towing Features

One of the most helpful Passport features for towing is Honda’s Intelligent Traction Management system. This system is part of the Passport’s all-wheel-drive setup and provides additional control in difficult driving conditions. Honda developed its Intelligent Traction Management system at its R&D center right here in Ohio.

Several driving modes are offered by Intelligent Traction Management, including snow, mud, sand, and normal.

Passport Cargo Capacity

In addition to strong towing numbers, the Passport boasts a large cargo area inside the cabin so that you can transport smaller items. With both rows of seats in use, you’ll have 41.2 cu ft at the rear, which is one of the largest spaces offered by a two-row crossover. If you can afford to fold down the rear row, you’ll open up 77.7 cu ft of space.

Honda Passport Seating

The Passport offers a luxurious cabin with leather upholstery and power-adjustable, heated front seats as standard. There’s plenty of legroom and headroom in both rows, which provide ample room for either four adults or two adults up-front and three kids in the rear. If you need to install child seating, there are three sets of LATCH connectors in the rear row.

If you want an even more upscale cabin, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are on offer. Rear sunshades and ambient lighting can also be added to make the cabin more relaxing for longer journeys.

Passport Infotainment and Safety Features

Wherever you’re headed with your load in tow, your passengers can relax thanks to a broad selection of modern entertainment features. The Passport’s infotainment system includes an 8-inch screen and seven-speaker stereo. In terms of connectivity, smart phone compatibility is provided by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and you can connect your device using either Bluetooth or one of the three USB ports. Wireless device charging is offered as standard.

If you want to upgrade your infotainment system, you can add a premium 10-speaker stereo. In addition, a WiFi hotspot is another useful add-on, especially if you’re taking your Passport for a weekend camping trip and want to stay connected wherever you go.

Safety is always a primary concern, but it’s even more important when you’re towing something. The Passport is equipped with a long list of standard safety features. For example, front and rear parking sensors will help you to maneuver in and out of a parking spot, even if you’ve got a camper attached at the rear. You also get a rear-seat reminder, which alerts you to check for kids or pets in the back before you get out of the car.

Other standard safety features include forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. When you get up to highway speeds, you gain access to adaptive cruise control, which manages your speed to keep you a safe distance away from other drivers. Lane-keep assist and lane-departure warning also come into play to help you to stay on course.

We hope our that overview has shown you just how effective the Honda Passport can be as a towing machine in the mid-sized crossover class.
