What Are Honda’s Blind-Spot Monitoring and Cross-Traffic Monitoring Systems?

Honda’s blind-spot monitoring system, called the blind spot information system, is a set of sensors and lights that alerts you to the presence of a vehicle in your car’s blind spot. The blind spot information system consists of a warning light on your side mirror, which lights up on the side of the car when there’s a vehicle in your blind spot. While not all Honda vehicles with blind spot information systems include cross-traffic monitoring, some do. Cross-traffic monitor is an alert system that warns you if another vehicle is driving behind you when your car is in reverse.

How Does Honda’s Blind Spot Information System Work?

Honda vehicles with the blind spot information system have one sensor on the rear corner of the car. The sensor detects vehicles in an area approximately 13 feet behind your car and 10.5 feet to either side. There is also a light on each of your side mirrors. These lights turn on to alert you to the presence of another vehicle. If you activate your turn signal on the same side as the illuminated indicator, the indicator will begin to flash, and you will hear an alert beep three times.

Please note that the system is inactive if you are driving at less than six mph. This is done to avoid false alarms. The blind spot information system is not a substitute for other safety measures, such as visually checking your blind spot.

How Does Honda’s Cross-Traffic Monitor Work?

The cross-traffic monitor is similar to the blind spot information system and uses much of the same technology. Like the blind spot information system, it senses vehicles in a specific area and alerts you to their presence. The cross traffic monitor has sensors in the rear bumper and senses vehicles within 82 feet of your car. This system provides both an audible and visual indicator. For the cross-traffic monitor, the indicator appears in your rearview camera display and tells you where the vehicle is coming from.

When Did Honda Phase Out LaneWatch?

Honda LaneWatch was phased out of the market over several years, beginning around 2017. Honda gradually transitioned from LaneWatch to the blind spot information system as its vehicles were updated and refreshed. You may still find gently used cars for sale with LaneWatch, as it was included in new models within the past few years.

Why Did Honda Phase Out LaneWatch in Favor of Blind-Spot Monitoring?

LaneWatch was an innovative camera system that helped keep drivers safe while avoiding the high costs of installing radar sensors on vehicles. However, it is now less expensive to manufacture cars with the types of sensors that make the blind spot information system and cross-traffic monitoring work. The newer systems monitor the left and right lanes next to your vehicle, whereas LaneWatch only monitors the right lane.

Honda’s blind spot information system and the other cross-traffic monitoring system are great options to help you stay safe on the road. Many new Honda vehicles include this helpful feature.
