August 15th, 2023 by

If you’re looking for a compact SUV, you may be considering the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. Both have excellent fuel economy and state-of-the-art technologies. However, one offers more bang for your buck regarding space and amenities. Keep reading to explore the differences between the 2024 Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.

CR-V & RAV4 Trim Level Comparison

Both the 2024 Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 come in a variety of trims. In the 2024 model year, the CR-V comes in six trim levels: the LX, EX, Sport Hybrid, EX-L, Sport-L Hybrid, and Sport Touring Hybrid. The LX, EX, and EX-L are gas-powered models, while the other three have hybrid powertrains. The Sport-L Hybrid is an entirely new trim in 2024, and it comes with premium features such as leather-trimmed seats with unique stitching, parking sensors, and wireless smartphone compatibility.

While Toyota has yet to release the 2024 RAV4, Motor Trend expects the lineup to be similar to the 2023 model year. The Toyota RAV4 currently comes in 13 trims, including six gas-powered models and seven hybrids. When comparing similar trims of the CR-V and the RAV4, Honda offers more standard amenities, giving it the advantage.

Exterior

With its rugged design and athletic frame, the 2024 Honda CR-V stands out from other vehicles on the roadways in Fairfield, Ohio. This stunning SUV features a gloss-black grille, LED headlights and taillights, and dual-chrome exhaust finishers. The gas-powered LE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, while the hybrid versions ride on 18- or 19-inch gloss-black alloy wheels. Except for the LE, every 2024 CR-V comes with a one-touch power moonroof. The three upper trims also come with a power tailgate you can program to your ideal height, making it easier to load groceries or luggage in the back.

Like the CR-V, the RAV4 has a striking design with rugged good looks. LED headlights and taillights come standard across the lineup. The RAV4 also rides on 17-inch steel wheels, with 18- and 19-inch wheels available. Lower trims don’t have a power moonroof, even in hybrid versions. The same goes for a height-adjustable power liftgate, which you’ll only get standard in upper trims and available as an option on others.

CR-V vs RAV4: Which Has the Better Fuel Economy?

You’ll make fewer stops at the gas station when you drive a 2024 Honda CR-V. The LX, EX, and EX-L models have a powerful 190-horsepower turbocharged engine and are available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Front-wheel-drive versions get 28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. In all-wheel-drive versions, those numbers drop slightly to 27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined.

If you want even better fuel economy, opt for one of the CR-V hybrid trims. The hybrid powertrain features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, which combine to produce 204 total system horsepower. The hybrid CR-V gets up to 43 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined. Whether you’re running errands or taking a road trip, you’ll go farther on a tank of gas.

The 2023 RAV4 comes with a 203-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive comes standard, though all-wheel drive is available on some trims. Front-wheel-drive RAV4s get an estimated 27 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The RAV4 hybrid models come powered by a 2.5-liter engine paired with two electric motors, generating 219 combined net horsepower. All-wheel drive comes standard on hybrid RAV4s, which get 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined.

Interior and Cargo Space

Honda CR-V Cargo Capacity Tailgate open

Both the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 have seating for five people. Still, the Honda is a slightly longer SUV, meaning you’ll get more interior and cargo space. Passengers in the back seat have 41 inches of legroom, nearly identical to the space in the front seat. You’ll have 39.3 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats up. When you need more room to haul boxes or gear, you can fold the rear seats flat for up to 76.5 cubic feet of space.

Passengers in the Toyota RAV4 may feel cramped in the back seat, which offers 37.8 inches of legroom. There’s also significantly less room in the RAV4’s cargo area. With the rear seats up, you’ll have 37.6 cubic feet of volume; when you fold the seats down, you’ll only get 69.8 cubic feet of space.

Comfort and Amenities

Inside the 2024 Honda CR-V, you’ll experience many amenities to make your ride more pleasant whether driving across town or venturing beyond Southwest Ohio. The CR-V comes standard with push-button start and ambient lighting in the center console. Except for the base trim, every CR-V features dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats, so you can stay comfortable every season. Upper trims come with leather-trimmed seats and a leather steering wheel.

In general, the RAV4 offers a sparser selection of premium features, especially in the lower trims. Heated front seats don’t come standard until you get to the higher-end models, though you can choose to add them as part of an optional package on some trims for an additional cost. Fabric-trimmed seats come standard, and upper trims have leatherette upholstery.

Infotainment and Technology

The Honda CR-V comes with a 7-inch color touch screen, which increases to a 9-inch screen in the EX-L, Sport-L Hybrid, and Sport Touring Hybrid. Those models also come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and a wireless phone charger. Hands-free Bluetooth and streaming audio are standard across the lineup. In most trims, you’ll get a six- or eight-speaker audio system, or you can choose the top-level Sport Touring Hybrid for a premium Bose sound system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer.

In the RAV4, you’ll get an 8-inch or 10.5-inch touch screen, depending on the trim. The infotainment system offers wireless smartphone compatibility. A six-speaker audio system comes standard, but the Limited trims feature an 11-speaker JBL system with a subwoofer.
